Simple economic incentives solved social problems. The community self-regulated through a clean, mechanical lever.
It's a seductive story because it suggests there was once a time when online governance actually worked—when you could solve cultural problems with procedural tools, like tuning a well-designed game economy. But the mythology obscures what actually happened, and more importantly, why it mattered.
This is the origin story of the modern internet — and why it keeps repeating itself.
The ten-dollar fee wasn't magic. It was ritual.
What kept Something Awful functional wasn't the payment barrier—it was cultural containment. Dense social hierarchy. Relentless posting norms. Shared in-group identity that made rule-breaking feel like social suicide. The fee was just a visible reminder that posting was a privilege, not a right. It signaled that this space was serious business, even when—especially when—the business was elaborate shitposting.
SA perfected something that forums had been improvising since the early internet: moderation-by-vibes. Not just explicit rules enforced by administrators, but social pressure distributed through the community itself. Tight boundaries created space for ritualized conflict. Bans weren't just punishment—they were performance. Mods and admins weren't just cops—they were characters in an ongoing drama, shaping narrative through their interventions.
This worked because SA was a village. Everyone knew the cultural context. The boundaries were clear. When someone got banned, it was often as much entertainment as enforcement. The community could metabolize conflict without tearing itself apart because the conflict was contained, consensual, and fundamentally playful.
But villages don't scale.
The Great Escape
The first crack in the containment was 4chan, which took SA's cultural DNA and stripped out every safety mechanism. Same ritualized conflict patterns, same hierarchical spectatorship, same moderation-as-performance—but anonymous, boundary-less, and deliberately hostile to the kind of social cohesion that had made SA's system stable.
4chan proved that SA's cultural logic could spread far beyond its original context, but it also demonstrated what happened when you removed the guardrails. The drama mechanics that felt playful in a bounded community became weapons when unleashed into an anonymous, consequence-free environment. Callouts became raids. Social pressure became harassment campaigns. Community self-policing became mob justice.
Then Twitter arrived and industrialized the whole process.
Twitter's timing was perfect: mobile adoption meant millions of new users carrying persistent identity-based posting in their pockets, while the platform's real-name culture eliminated the anonymous buffer that had contained SA's worst impulses. Twitter took SA's ritualized conflict patterns and wired them directly into an identity-driven attention economy. Quote tweets became the new pile-on mechanism. Ratios replaced traditional moderation. The "dunking" that had been informal social pressure in SA became literal engagement metrics, tracked, quantified, and algorithmically amplified.
This wasn't accidental convergent evolution. The people building these platforms had been socialized inside SA's cultural framework. They understood what "online community" meant through that lens. When they designed new systems, they replicated the social patterns they knew, assuming they could scale the mechanics without scaling the problems.
They were wrong.
The Algorithm Becomes the Culture

So they build technical solutions. Federation distributes hosting. Protocol design enables algorithmic choice. Data portability provides user sovereignty. But none of this touches the underlying cultural operating system.
Mastodon: A Thousand Tiny Tyrannies
Mastodon took SA's village model and tried to scale it through federation. Instead of one community with clear boundaries, you get thousands of little communities, each with their own petty dictator. Instance admins wield absolute power over their domains—bans, policies, visibility, even technical sabotage. Users can migrate between instances, but at the cost of losing network ties, social capital, and community context.
The result preserves SA's hierarchical control while eliminating everything that made it functional—the shared cultural context, consensual participation, and clear community boundaries that allowed the village model to work. This isn't sovereignty—it's feudalism. Instead of one centralized platform to contest, users face thousands of tiny jurisdictions with opaque rules and inconsistent enforcement. Meanwhile, legal liability gets distributed to hobbyist admins with zero resources for compliance, creating hyper-reactive moderation cultures that make Twitter look permissive.
Bluesky: The Algorithmic Shell Game
Bluesky takes a different approach: keep centralized hosting but distribute algorithmic choice. Users can "bring their own algorithm" and customize their feeds. It feels like user empowerment, but it's actually a sophisticated form of misdirection.
The real power lies in the trust graph and ingestion layer—who gets included in the data stream that algorithms can operate on. You can customize your edge caching all you want, but if the backbone routing is controlled centrally, your choices are illusory. It's like being allowed to choose your radio station while someone else controls the broadcast towers.
The Pattern Recognition
Both approaches share a fundamental flaw: they treat culture as a layer you can swap out, like a UI skin over neutral infrastructure. But culture isn't separable from the technical systems anymore. The cultural patterns have become the technical patterns. The social protocols have become network protocols.
This is why every new platform ends up recreating the same dynamics with different aesthetics. Why "algorithm transparency" doesn't fix anything. Making the ranking system visible doesn't address the underlying cultural assumption that social interaction should be optimized for drama and engagement. Transparent bad algorithms are still bad algorithms.
Why decentralization keeps failing. You can't solve a cultural problem with an architectural solution. Distributing the hosting doesn't change the social operating system running on those distributed hosts.
The most insidious aspect is how this cultural infrastructure makes alternatives literally unthinkable. When someone proposes a different model for online interaction, the immediate response is: "But how will you handle trolls? What about harassment? How will you moderate at scale?" The dynamics that felt toxic in a bounded forum with a few thousand users were always going to be catastrophic when scaled to billions of people with no shared context, no escape routes, and algorithms optimizing for maximum engagement.
Real alternatives would require acknowledging that SA's social operating system has reached the end of its useful life. That means abandoning the assumption that online social interaction must be organized around drama, hierarchy, and performative conflict. It means designing systems that optimize for different values: genuine dialogue over engagement, collaboration over competition, mutual aid over social capital accumulation.
This isn't about returning to some imagined golden age of forums. It's about recognizing that the cultural infrastructure we inherited from SA was designed for a specific context that no longer exists, and building new frameworks suited to the realities of global-scale digital communication.
But first, we have to stop pretending that technical solutions can solve cultural problems. You don't debug social pathology by optimizing the codebase. You don't fix toxic community dynamics by switching to a different cloud provider. You don't exorcise a ghost by moving to a different haunted house.
The internet runs on the ghost of Something Awful, haunting every new platform that emerges. Until we're willing to exorcise that ghost entirely, we'll keep building new stages for the same old play.
